Artist Statement: A Portal To Social Change

My goal is to integrate sculpture meaningfully into the community and create a dialogue about art with the public. This sculpture is designed as a temporary honorific monument to the organizations that I am working with to draw attention to their worthwhile work that serves our community. It is meant to be a “portal” to a progressive local and global future, which highlights the importance of non-governmental agencies, alternative media and the new role of the artist as a public intellectual who is engaged with their community.
The sculpture is made from welded steel, fiberglass and glitter. The sculpture is meant to have a mystical quality and to be open to the viewer’s interpretation. The sculpture will be displayed at most organizations from dawn until dusk for one day in front of the pathway or doorway to each organization’s building. I want the viewer to interact with the artwork by walking through the sculpture. I also have a television show titled Our Posthumanist Future on TVTV channel 11. Members from the different organizations will discuss their organizations and the important role they play in our community. I will also have a sculptural installation displayed in the Hemingway Gallery for the BFA Thesis Exhibition titled Aleph-Null, which will incorporate video and sculpture. That art show opens November 12th and will feature 13 other BFA candidate artists. On November 20th the sculpture will be auctioned off at the Stewart Gallery for the Boise Weekly’s Annual Cover Auction. The proceeds will benefit the YMCA Art Programs.
